For Friends and Clients of The Hoffman Agency Address, Phone, Fax, Email, Website THE UPSIDE OF THE ECONOMIC DOWNTURN Yes, thats what I said. Every downside has an upside. And we all know that we need to be looking for as many positives as we can right now. So here are some positives to think about You probably have decided that going out to eat once a week is not a good thing for the budget. So whats the up side of this? Explore new menu ideas the internet is loaded with food articles and menus that dont have to cost a lot. Have a cookbook that hasnt been openedjust sitting thereloaded with interesting recipes? Have kids in your household? Give them a dollar amount and let them plan a meal. Pick a country that you know little about and fix an ethnic meal. If you do go out to eat, make it special.not just because you dont want to cook. If both parents have been working in a family household, and now either Mom or Dad isnt, what an opportunity for the stay-at-home parent. (You are probably saving on some child-care costs). Now you have the time to volunteer at your childs school, or arrange play-dates with other families. You can also think of this as networkingany conversation can be valuable. Get to know your neighbors. Have a pot luck on the weekend. We seem to have become somewhat insulated in how we live these days. How well do you know who lives next door? And again, if you happen to be on a job search, this is another opportunity to network. Go to the library. Even more than usual. Always wanted to learn more about a particular culture? I know, its easier to sit in front of the computer and read the screen, but there is still something special about taking a book off a shelf and sitting down and turning pages. And of course, there are tons of movies and documentaries available to check out FOR FREE. If you live in a space where you can grow a garden, do it! Whether its a couple of pots on a windowsill, or planters on the deck or a full blown till up the back yard, there is something very satisfying about growing your own vegetables and fruits and herbs. And you know what you are eating! Keep your thoughts and attitudes as positive as you can. Smiling uses less muscles than frowning. Inside This Issue Upside of the Downturn.....Page 1 Turning Your Garden Into a Work of Art...Page 2 Sidebars: Lawn Mower Safety & Car Travel Safety Are YOU The Client of the Month? See Page 3 to find out if you won! Lawnmower Safety Most lawnmower injuries are preventable if you concentrate on your task and use common sense. Some basic tips: Read the instruction manual before using a lawnmower. Be sober. No bare feet. Always wear closed toe shoes. Do not remove safety devices, shields or guards on switches, and keep hands and feet away from moving parts. Stay away from the engine cowling, as it can become very hot and burn unprotected flesh. Add fuel before starting the engine, not when it is running or hot. Use a stick or broom handle (not your hands or feet) to remove debris in lawnmowers. Never let children operate lawnmowers. Keep kids 15 years of age and younger away when lawnmowers are in use. Do not leave a lawnmower unattended when it is running. If you must walk away from the machine, shut off the engine. Traveling Safe In Your Car That travel time of the year is just around the corner. Probably not the way we would like since we are all tightening our purse strings or crossing things off our want to do lists. Regardless of whether you are going to plan a three day weekend or a couple of weeks to a different part of the country, dont forget car safety planning. Make sure your car insurance is up to date and you have all the coverage you need If you dont already, consider joining a road travel club such as AAA. Not only do they provide roadside service, they can also help you with routes, lodging, sightseeing, and dining. Service your car tires checked, (properly inflated will also save dollars) under the hood fluids all full, all lights in working condition. If you dont have a car charger for your cell phone, invest in one. Nothing scarier than picking up your phone and seeing that its got a dead battery. If you happen to be traveling across several states, make a list of Department of Transportation numbers for those states. Always have alternative phone numbers. Give someone your itinerary and vehicle identification. Check in at least once a day. Keep your gas tank at least half full. Stop at rest areas where there are other vehicles. Stop when you feel like you are getting tired or are in that zone when the road goes straight for a long time. Never pull over for a vehicle other than a marked police vehicle. If need be, drive to the nearest populated exit before stopping. If you do have a breakdown, do not let a stranger in your car. Keep windows up and doors locked and call for help or ask them to go for help. Dont leave your car and go with someone else. When you stop roll up windows and lock doors. Carry extra food and water. Turning Your Garden Into A Work of Art It doesnt matter if you live on 500 acres, in a suburban home with a fenced yard, a loft high above the city, or an apartment outside of town; everyone can have a colorful garden that sparkles! And think about vegetables also. You could realize a good amount of savings by growing your own salad. And nothing tastes better than fresh picked! STARTING A GARDEN: Your garden can be an English masterpiece or a few containers placed on your patio. The first step is to find out what types of plants will survive in your area. A quick trip to a local plant nursery will tell you what grows well near you. Next, decide how large a garden you want to plant. If you have a 10x8 foot patio, then a few strategically placed potted plants will be perfect. If you are thinking of a grander scale, figure out exactly how big you want to make it. CHOOSING THE PLANTS: There are four things to consider when choosing plants: * Size * Shape * Texture * Color Combining the right plants will make your garden, no matter what the scale, a beautiful one. SIZE: Consider the mature size of the plants you pick. Dont put a Redwood tree in a patio pot. Also, layer your plant sizes. Put larger plants in the pack and smaller plants in the front. This holds true for patio gardens and large gardens. If youre including herbs and vegetables consider what you are going to do with them as they mature. You can get a whole summers worth of tomatoes with just one plant. One package of field greens or mixed lettuce seeds gives you enough to feed the neighborhood! SHAPE: Unless you shape your plants through pruning, plants have a predetermined shape. Effectively combing the shapes of plants will create an eye-pleasing contrast that really pops. Consider combining small daisies with tall, spire-like flowers to enliven the look, or consider plants with tall, sword-shaped leaves combined with plants that have round, feathery leaves. Keeping herbs snipped on a regular basis gives you freshness in the kitchen and beautiful full outdoor plants. TEXTURE: Some plants have sharp textures (think tall grasses, etc.), some have smooth leaves and petals (think tulips.) Try including a range of textures to add visual interest. It will be much more exciting to have three pots with tall grasses and two with daisies than five pots of grasses or five pots of daisies. COLOR: Combining color effectively can be an art. To help as you choose color combinations, take a look at a color wheel and keep these tips in mind: Colors that are next to each other on the wheel are soothing and pleasing. Colors opposite each other on the wheel are bold and exciting. Green foliage helps neutralize brighter colors and make them more pleasing to the eye. White and pastels help lighten up shady areas. Dark colors tend to make shady areas look gloomy and darker. Heirloom seeds are becoming more popular and produce some amazing flowers and vegetables. Purple carrots, various types of radishes, flowers that your grandparents probably grew. CONCLUSION: Hopefully these tips will help as you get ready to plant your spring garden this year. Just remember, no matter the size of the garden, choose what you like the best and what will make you the happiest. Make your garden your home away from home and youll be sure to enjoy it all season long. Your Name ________________________ Your Answer_______________________ Last Months Winner: Congratulations to [winners name] for correctly answering last months trivia question! For the correct answer, [winners name] has won a free [prize name]! Last months question was: What candy bar claims to be named after one of U.S. President Grover Cleveland's children? ANSWER: The Curtiss Candy Company has traditionally claimed that the Baby Ruth candy bar was named after President Grover Cleveland's daughter, Ruth Cleveland. Skeptics, however, are quick to point out that not only did Ruth Cleveland die 16 years before the introduction of the Baby Ruth bar, but the company had originally negotiated a failed endorsement deal with legendary baseball player Babe Ruth. Some have suggested that secretly naming the candy bar after Ruth was a way to tie him to their product without paying any royalties. Always a shrewd advertiser, company founder Otto Schnering chartered a plane in 1923 to drop thousands of Baby Ruth bars over the city of Pittsburgh -- each with its own mini parachute. His marketing plan must have worked -- Baby Ruth has gone on to become a top confectionary brand. Today, the Baby Ruth bar is owned by Nestl. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!
